Runestone Museum

The Museum

The Runestone Museum is Alexandria’s main history museum, centered around the Kensington Runestone but covering much more than that. It’s located downtown next to Big Ole and houses exhibits on Douglas County history, early settlement, Native American heritage, and the ongoing Runestone debate.

The Runestone Exhibit

The actual Kensington Runestone is here — behind glass, with detailed explanations of the inscription, the discovery, and both sides of the authenticity debate. It’s smaller than most people expect. Seeing it in person is different from seeing photos — the carving detail and the weight of the thing make the whole story more tangible.

Fort Alexandria

The museum grounds include a replica of Fort Alexandria, an 1860s frontier fort with log buildings, a blacksmith shop, and period artifacts. It gives a sense of what early European settlement looked like in this part of Minnesota. Kids especially enjoy walking through the fort buildings.

Other Exhibits

Rotating exhibits cover various aspects of local and regional history. Past exhibits have included topics like lake culture, agricultural history, wartime contributions, and Scandinavian heritage. The museum also maintains archives useful for genealogical research.

Visiting

The museum charges a modest admission fee. Hours vary seasonally — summer hours are the most extensive. Plan for about an hour to see everything, more if you’re genuinely interested in the Runestone debate or local history. It’s an easy add-on to a Big Ole photo stop.
