Childcare & Daycare
Finding Childcare
Childcare is one of the most practical and pressing concerns for families in Alexandria — and like most of rural Minnesota, demand exceeds supply. Finding reliable, affordable childcare takes planning, patience, and sometimes a waitlist.
Licensed Centers
Several licensed childcare centers operate in Alexandria, serving infants through school-age children. These offer structured programming, trained staff, and consistent hours that align with working parents’ schedules. Quality is generally good, but spots fill fast — get on waitlists as early as possible, ideally before the baby arrives.
Family Childcare
Licensed family childcare providers — people who run smaller operations out of their homes — are another significant piece of the childcare landscape. Group sizes are smaller, the setting is more homelike, and the flexibility can be greater. The tradeoff is that when a home provider is sick or on vacation, you need a backup plan.
Preschool
Preschool programs are available through the school district’s early childhood program, private schools, churches, and some childcare centers. These serve 3-5 year olds with educational programming designed to prepare kids for kindergarten. Half-day and full-day options vary by provider.
The Shortage
Alexandria, like most of greater Minnesota, has a childcare shortage. There are more families needing care than there are available spots. This is a real factor for families considering a move to the area — research childcare options before you relocate, not after. The community is aware of the issue and there are ongoing efforts to expand capacity, but progress is slow.
Resources
Parent Aware ratings help evaluate program quality — check parentaware.org. Child Care Aware of Minnesota can help with searches and referrals. The school district’s early childhood office is another starting point. Word of mouth from other parents remains one of the most reliable ways to find good care.
