Summer Camps
Keeping Kids Busy
Summer in Alexandria is 12 weeks of freedom for kids and 12 weeks of logistical planning for parents. Summer camps fill both needs — giving kids structured activities, new skills, and social time while giving parents reliable coverage during the work week.
Day Camps
Community education runs day camps covering a range of activities — sports, arts, nature, science, and general recreation. These typically run in weekly sessions throughout June, July, and August. They’re affordable, well-organized, and popular enough that early registration matters. Church-based day camps are another option, often with a vacation bible school component.
Sports Camps
Sport-specific camps run through the school district, community organizations, and private coaches. Football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, baseball, swimming, and other sports offer week-long sessions focused on skill development. These are a good way for kids to stay active in their sport during the off-season and meet other athletes.
Overnight Camps
Several overnight camps operate in the lakes region within driving distance of Alexandria. These offer traditional camp experiences — cabins, campfires, swimming, canoeing, and cabin-group bonding. Sessions range from a few days to multiple weeks. Overnight camps are a bigger commitment and cost more, but the independence and confidence kids gain is hard to replicate elsewhere.
Planning Ahead
The best camps fill early — especially popular sports camps and the more affordable community education options. Registration typically opens in late winter or early spring. Build your summer calendar in February or March if you want first pick. Scholarships and financial assistance may be available for some programs — ask when you register.
