Wineries & Distilleries
Beyond Beer
Alexandria has a surprisingly strong wine and spirits scene anchored by two places that draw visitors from well beyond Douglas County. Both are worth the short drive out of town.
Carlos Creek Winery
Carlos Creek is the big one. Located just west of Alexandria on the shores of Lake Carlos, it’s one of Minnesota’s most visited wineries. They produce a wide range — dry reds, sweet whites, fruit wines, and everything in between. The tasting room is open year-round, the grounds are beautiful, and their annual Grape Stomp festival in September is one of Alexandria’s biggest events. Even if you’re not a wine person, the setting alone is worth a visit.
Panther Distillery
Panther makes small-batch spirits using locally sourced grains. Vodka, gin, whiskey, and flavored options. The tasting room is casual and the staff will walk you through what they’re making. It’s a newer operation but has built a solid following. If you’re into craft spirits, this is a genuine small-batch producer — not a marketing exercise.
Visiting
Both places are a short drive from downtown Alexandria. Carlos Creek gets busy on summer weekends and during events — weekday afternoons are more relaxed. Panther is smaller and easier to drop into anytime. Neither requires reservations for tastings.
