Alexandria Public Schools

The District

Alexandria Public Schools (District 206) serves approximately 4,500 students across multiple buildings — from early childhood through 12th grade. It’s the largest school district in Douglas County and functions as the educational backbone of the community.

Schools

The district operates several elementary schools, a middle school complex, and Alexandria Area High School. Early childhood and pre-K programs are also part of the system. Each building has its own personality, but the district operates as a unified system with consistent curriculum and standards.

Academics

The district offers a comprehensive academic program with college prep courses, AP options at the high school level, and special education services across all grades. Test scores and graduation rates are generally competitive with or above state averages. The district participates in PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options), allowing high school students to take college courses.

Activities & Athletics

Alexandria competes as the Cardinals in Minnesota State High School League athletics. The school has strong traditions in multiple sports — football, hockey, swimming, and track among them. Beyond athletics, the district offers band, choir, theatre, robotics, and a range of extracurricular clubs.

Community Connection

In a town this size, the school district is deeply woven into community life. Friday night football games, school concerts, and graduation ceremonies are community events, not just school events. Teachers live in town. Parents volunteer. The line between school and community is intentionally thin.
