Where to Launch

Most of the major lakes around Alexandria have at least one public boat launch maintained by the county or DNR. Quality varies — some are concrete ramps with good parking, others are gravel with room for maybe ten trailers. Here’s what to expect on the most popular lakes.

Lake Carlos

Two main launches: one inside Lake Carlos State Park (day pass or annual permit required) and one on the south end off County Road 62. The state park ramp is better maintained but both get crowded on summer weekends. Arrive before 8 AM on Saturdays or plan to wait.

Lake Darling

Public launch on the east side off County Road 82. Single concrete ramp with a decent dock. Parking fills up fast — maybe 15-20 trailer spots. Weekday access is easy, weekends are a different story.

Lake Le Homme Dieu

South end access off County Road 34. It’s a serviceable ramp but nothing fancy. Less traffic than Carlos or Darling, so you can usually get on the water without a long wait.

Lake Miltona

Good public access on the northwest shore. This is a bigger ramp with more parking — one of the better facilities in the area. Miltona is about 15 minutes north of Alexandria.

Lake Ida

Public launch on the south end. Ida is a large lake — over 3,500 acres — so it absorbs boat traffic well even on busy days. About 10 minutes north of town.

Tips

Inspecting your boat for aquatic invasive species is required by Minnesota law. There are decontamination stations at some launches. Drain your livewell, pull your plug, and clean off any vegetation before you leave — the DNR does check, and fines are real.
