Lake Carlos

The Crown Jewel

Lake Carlos is the deepest and clearest lake in the Alexandria chain, reaching depths of over 160 feet. It covers roughly 2,600 acres and connects to Lake Darling and Lake Le Homme Dieu through the Chain of Lakes waterway. If you’re coming to Alexandria for one lake, this is probably the one.

Fishing

Carlos is known for walleye, largemouth bass, and northern pike. The deeper water also holds tullibee and lake trout — uncommon for this part of Minnesota. Early morning trolling along the drop-offs on the north end is a local favorite for walleye. In winter, the lake draws a serious ice fishing crowd, with houses scattered across the flats by mid-December most years.

Lake Carlos State Park

The state park sits on the north shore and offers camping, hiking trails, a swimming beach, and boat access. It’s one of the most popular state parks in west-central Minnesota — reserve campsites early if you’re planning a summer weekend.

Access

Public boat launches are available at the state park and on the south end of the lake off County Road 62. Both can get busy on summer weekends, so early mornings are your best bet.
