Parking & Getting Around

Parking Downtown

Good news: parking in downtown Alexandria is free, plentiful, and not stressful. This isn’t Minneapolis. You will find a spot, and you won’t have to pay for it or set a timer.

Street Parking

Angled street parking lines both sides of Broadway through the main commercial district. On a typical weekday, you’ll find a spot within a block of wherever you’re going. Summer weekends and event days are busier, but even then, walking two blocks is the worst case scenario.

Parking Lots

Several free public lots sit behind the buildings on both sides of Broadway. These are your best bet during busy periods or if you’re planning to be downtown for a while. They’re not always well-marked, but locals know them — look for the gaps between buildings.

During Events

Crazy Days, parades, Art in the Park weekends, and other downtown events do fill up the usual spots. During these times, you may need to park a few blocks out and walk in. Side streets in the surrounding residential areas are generally fine for parking — just be respectful of driveways and don’t block anything.

Winter

Snow emergencies can restrict parking on certain streets for plowing. The city announces these — pay attention or you’ll get towed. Off-street lots are your safest bet during and after snowstorms.
