Public Beaches

Swimming Spots

Alexandria has several public beaches that are free and open all summer. Most don’t have lifeguards, so keep an eye on kids. Water quality is generally excellent — these are clean, spring-fed lakes.

Lake Carlos State Park Beach

The best public beach in the area. Sandy bottom, gradual entry, clear water, and it’s inside the state park so the surroundings are pristine. You’ll need a state park vehicle permit (daily or annual). There are changing rooms and restrooms nearby.

City Park Beach

Right in town on Lake Agnes. This is where local families go after work on a Tuesday. Sandy beach, picnic tables, a fishing pier nearby, and a playground within walking distance. Free and easy to get to — just follow Broadway south.

Noonan Park

On Lake Winona, just east of downtown. Smaller beach area but less crowded than City Park. Good for a quick swim. The park also has tennis courts and a walking path.

What to Know

Most beaches are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, though nobody’s checking calendars — if it’s warm in May, people are swimming. Algae blooms can occasionally affect water quality in late summer on some lakes. The Douglas County Public Health department posts advisories when conditions warrant.
