Fishing Guide

Fishing the Alexandria Lakes

Douglas County has over 350 lakes, and a good number of them hold fish worth chasing. The Chain of Lakes — Carlos, Darling, Le Homme Dieu, and several connected smaller lakes — gets the most attention, but there are dozens of quieter lakes that produce just as well with less boat traffic.

Walleye

This is walleye country. Lake Carlos is the marquee walleye lake, with fish regularly hitting 20 inches and better. Trolling crankbaits along rocky points and drop-offs works most of the season. Lake Miltona and Lake Ida are also strong walleye producers that get less pressure than the chain.

Bass

Largemouth bass thrive in the weedier, shallower lakes. Le Homme Dieu, Geneva, and Darling all have healthy bass populations. Topwater fishing early morning in June and July is hard to beat around here.

Panfish

Crappies and sunfish are everywhere. Lake Brophy and Lake Agnes are local favorites for panfish, especially in spring when they move shallow. These are great lakes to take kids — action is steady and you don’t need fancy gear.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is a big deal here. Most lakes have safe ice by mid-December, and the season runs through mid-March in a normal year. Lake Carlos draws the biggest ice fishing crowd, but smaller lakes like Maple and Victoria offer excellent panfish through the ice with far fewer people.

Licenses & Regulations

Minnesota fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 and older. You can buy them online through the Minnesota DNR website or at most bait shops and sporting goods stores in town. Check current regulations for slot limits — they vary by lake.
