Faith Communities

Alexandria has a significant number of churches relative to its population — a legacy of the Scandinavian Lutheran settlement that built the town and the Catholic and other Christian communities that followed. If you’re looking for a church home, there’s a wide range of options.

Lutheran

Lutheran congregations are the most numerous, spanning ELCA, LCMS, and WELS affiliations. Some of these churches trace back to the original Scandinavian settlements and remain the largest congregations in town. Worship styles range from traditional liturgy to contemporary services depending on the congregation.

Catholic

Catholic parishes serve the Alexandria area with regular Mass schedules, religious education, and community programming. St. Mary’s Church is the most prominent Catholic presence in town, with an attached school.

Other Denominations

Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, non-denominational, and other Christian churches are represented in the area. Congregation sizes range from large community churches with full programming to smaller independent congregations. There’s enough variety that most Christian traditions can find a home.

Community Role

Churches in Alexandria function as more than worship spaces. They host community meals, support food shelves, organize youth programs, run preschools, and serve as gathering places for people who might not have other social connections. For new residents, joining a church is one of the fastest ways to build a social network — the community structures are already there.

Finding a Fit

Most churches welcome visitors and don’t pressure first-timers. Attend a service or two, talk to the pastor, and see if the culture fits. Denomination matters less than community fit for most people. Many churches list service times and information on their websites or social media pages.
