City & County Government

How Things Work

Alexandria operates under a city council-manager form of government. Douglas County handles the broader regional services. Between the two, most of the government functions you’ll interact with as a resident are covered locally — you don’t have to drive to St. Paul for much.

City of Alexandria

City hall handles utilities, building permits, code enforcement, parks, streets, and municipal services. The city council meets regularly and meetings are open to the public. If you need to do business with the city — set up utilities, pull a permit, ask about zoning — city hall is on Broadway and the staff is generally helpful and accessible.

Douglas County

The county handles property taxes, land records, elections, sheriff and law enforcement, highway maintenance, social services, and the court system. The courthouse is in Alexandria. Property tax questions, vehicle registration, and license services go through county offices.

DMV & Vehicle Services

Vehicle registration, license tabs, and driver’s license services are available at the Douglas County service center in Alexandria. Lines can be long at peak times — early morning and mid-week tend to be lighter. Some services are available online through the Minnesota DVS website.

Library

The Alexandria Public Library is part of the Viking Library System and offers books, digital media, public computers, meeting rooms, and programming for all ages. Library cards are free for residents. The library is an underused resource — it offers far more than most people realize, including interlibrary loan access to materials from across the state.

Voter Information

Douglas County handles election administration. Voter registration is available online, by mail, or on Election Day at your polling place. Check the county website or Secretary of State’s office for precinct locations, registration status, and upcoming election dates.
