Medical Care in Alexandria

For a town of 14,000, Alexandria has a remarkably complete healthcare system. You can handle most medical needs without driving to the Twin Cities or Fargo — which matters when the nearest major hospital is two hours away in good weather and considerably longer in a January blizzard.

Alomere Health

Alomere Health is the regional hospital and the anchor of Alexandria’s healthcare system. It’s a full-service community hospital with emergency care, surgical services, imaging, lab, birthing center, and inpatient care. Alomere also operates specialty clinics and has affiliations with larger health systems for cases that require specialized treatment. It’s also one of the largest employers in Douglas County.

Clinics

Multiple primary care clinics serve the area — some affiliated with Alomere, others independently operated. You’ll find family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and OB/GYN without difficulty. Walk-in and urgent care options are available for non-emergency situations when you can’t wait for a scheduled appointment.

Dental & Vision

Several dental offices and optometry clinics operate in Alexandria. Wait times for new patient appointments are generally reasonable. Specialty dental work and orthodontics are available locally. For complex eye issues beyond routine care, you may need to travel to a larger city.

Mental Health

Mental health services are available through clinic-based providers, independent therapists, and community organizations. Access has improved in recent years but demand still exceeds supply in some areas — wait times for new therapy patients can be longer than ideal. Telehealth options have expanded access somewhat. If you’re in crisis, Alomere’s emergency department and regional crisis lines are available 24/7.

Specialists

Alomere and affiliated clinics offer a range of specialties locally — cardiology, orthopedics, general surgery, oncology, and others. Some specialists rotate in from larger systems on certain days. For highly specialized or rare conditions, you’ll likely be referred to the Twin Cities, Fargo, or Rochester. The good news is the referral networks are well-established and the coordination is generally smooth.
