Moving to Alexandria
Thinking About the Move
People move to Alexandria for the lakes, the pace of life, and the kind of community that still functions like a community. It’s not for everyone — winters are brutal, the nearest major city is two hours away, and the dating scene for single adults is what it is. But for families, retirees, remote workers, and anyone who’s done with traffic, it’s a genuinely good place to land.
The Basics
Population is around 14,000 in town, with more in the surrounding area. It’s the largest city in Douglas County and serves as the regional hub for shopping, healthcare, and services. You can get most of what you need without leaving town. For everything else, there’s a two-hour drive to Fargo, St. Cloud, or the Twin Cities.
Cost of Living
Lower than the Twin Cities, higher than some rural Minnesota towns. Housing is the biggest variable — lakefront property is expensive, while in-town homes are more affordable. Groceries, utilities, and everyday costs are reasonable. If you’re coming from a major metro area, your money will go further here.
Jobs
Healthcare (Alomere Health), education, manufacturing, and small business are the main employment sectors. Remote work has brought new residents who work for companies elsewhere. The job market is tighter than a metro area — fewer options, but also less competition for certain positions. Check the Jobs & Employment page for more detail.
The Adjustment
If you’re from a bigger place, the adjustment is real. Stores close earlier. Entertainment options are more limited. You’ll drive on the same roads every day. But you’ll also know your neighbors, your commute will be five minutes, your kids will play outside unsupervised, and you’ll spend summer evenings on a lake instead of in traffic. Most people who make the move don’t go back.
