Summer Guide

Memorial Day to Labor Day

Summer is when Alexandria comes alive. The population swells with cabin owners and tourists, the lakes are full of boats, and the town’s calendar gets packed with events, dining, and outdoor activities. If you’re visiting or new to the area, here’s how to make the most of it.

On the Water

This is lake time. Swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, pontoon cruising — whatever your relationship with water, there’s a lake for it. The Chain of Lakes is the main attraction, but smaller lakes offer more solitude. Get on the water early in the morning for the best fishing and the calmest conditions.

Events & Festivals

Art in the Park, Crazy Days, the Douglas County Fair, Grape Stomp, PaddleFest, and dozens of smaller events fill the summer calendar. Check dates early — some events affect traffic and parking downtown. Others are worth planning a trip around.

Dining

Lakeside patios open up, restaurants extend their hours, and the breweries and winery are in peak season. Make reservations where you can on weekends — the popular spots fill up. Weeknight dining is more relaxed and just as good.

Trails & Parks

The Central Lakes Trail and Lake Wobegon Trail are in prime condition. Lake Carlos State Park is open for camping, hiking, and swimming. City parks host activities and events. Mornings and evenings are the most comfortable times for outdoor activity — afternoons can get hot and humid.

Practical Tips

Sunscreen. Bug spray. A cooler in the car. Arrive early to boat launches on weekends. Book campsite reservations months ahead. Keep an eye on weather — Minnesota summer storms come in fast and hit hard. And pace yourself — three months of trying to do everything is how you burn out by August.
