Andes Tower Hills

Downhill in the Flatlands

Andes Tower Hills is proof that you don’t need mountains to have a ski area. Located about 20 minutes south of Alexandria near Kensington, it offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing on terrain that’s surprisingly legit for west-central Minnesota. It’s been operating since the 1960s and is the winter sports hub for the Alexandria area.

The Hill

Andes has a vertical drop of around 500 feet — not Colorado numbers, but genuine enough to get your speed up and make turns that matter. The terrain includes beginner runs, intermediate cruisers, and a few steeper pitches that keep experienced skiers honest. Snowmaking ensures consistent coverage even when natural snow is thin.

Tubing

The tubing hill is its own attraction and arguably the most popular feature for families. No skill required — just sit in a tube and go. Tubing lanes are groomed and maintained, and a tow system brings you back to the top without hiking. It’s the easiest way to get non-skiers outside in winter.

Lessons & Rentals

Full rental equipment is available for skiing and snowboarding. Lesson programs serve beginners through advanced riders, with group and private options. The ski school has a good reputation for getting first-timers comfortable on the hill without traumatizing them.

Season & Hours

The season typically runs from December through March, depending on conditions. Hours vary — check their website for current schedules. Weekends and holiday breaks are the busiest times. Weekday sessions and night skiing offer fewer crowds and a different atmosphere. Lift tickets, tubing passes, and season passes are all available.
