Camping

Sleep Outside

The Alexandria area has multiple camping options — from full-service RV parks with hookups and WiFi to primitive walk-in sites where the only amenity is solitude. Lake Carlos State Park is the headliner, but private campgrounds and county parks fill out the options.

Lake Carlos State Park

The best camping in the area. Over 120 sites including drive-in, electric, and walk-in options. Some sites are near the lake, others are tucked in the woods. Camper cabins are available if you want a roof without a hotel bill. Reserve through the Minnesota DNR — summer weekends book up months in advance. This is not an exaggeration.

Private Campgrounds

Several private campgrounds around Alexandria offer RV hookups, pull-through sites, tent camping, and amenities like pools, playgrounds, and camp stores. These tend to be more family-oriented with planned activities during peak season. Reservations are recommended for summer weekends but not always required.

County & Regional Parks

Some Douglas County parks offer basic camping — fewer amenities but fewer people. These work well if you want a quieter experience without driving far from town. Check the county parks website for specific sites and rules.

What to Know

Mosquitoes are real from June through August — bring repellent and consider a screened shelter. Weather can shift quickly — a warm evening can turn into a cold night, especially near the lakes in spring and fall. Campfires are generally allowed but may be restricted during dry periods. Firewood should be purchased locally — don’t transport it from home due to invasive species concerns.
