Cross-Country Skiing

Quiet Winter Miles

Cross-country skiing is one of the best ways to experience an Alexandria winter without an engine. The area has groomed trails through woods and along lakeshores that turn the cold months into something you actually look forward to — or at least tolerate with grace.

Lake Carlos State Park

The state park is the premier XC ski destination in the area. The hiking trails convert to groomed ski trails in winter, offering about 8 miles of tracked terrain through hardwood forests and along the lakeshore. Classic and skate skiing lanes are maintained. The terrain has enough variety to keep intermediate skiers engaged without intimidating beginners.

Other Options

A few other parks and trail systems in the area offer groomed or skiable terrain. Quality and consistency vary — the state park is the most reliable. Some golfers ski the golf courses informally when snow cover allows, though this is unofficial and conditions are unpredictable.

Conditions

Grooming depends on snowfall. After a fresh snow, the state park trails are usually groomed within a day or two. Check the DNR website or call the park office for current conditions. Mid-January through mid-February typically offers the most consistent skiing.

Getting Started

XC skiing has a low barrier to entry. Rental equipment is available at some local sporting goods stores and through community education programs. The basic technique is intuitive — if you can walk, you can classic ski. Skate skiing has a steeper learning curve but covers ground faster. A state park vehicle permit is required to park at Lake Carlos State Park.
