Hunting
Hunting Douglas County
Hunting is deeply embedded in the culture around Alexandria. Deer opener in November is practically a state holiday — schools thin out, businesses adjust, and the woods fill up with blaze orange. Beyond deer, the area offers solid waterfowl, pheasant, and turkey hunting across a mix of public and private land.
Deer
Whitetail deer are the main draw. Douglas County falls in a permit area that typically offers both archery and firearms seasons. The mix of agricultural land, woodlots, and lake edges creates good habitat. Archery season runs from mid-September through December, firearms season is a short window in November. Check DNR regulations for current year permit requirements — they change.
Waterfowl
The lakes and wetlands around Alexandria sit in a productive flyway for ducks and geese. Opening weekend in early October draws hunters from across the state. The area holds birds well into November most years. Public hunting areas and walk-in access lands provide shooting opportunities, though private land permission remains the best option for consistent access.
Pheasant & Upland
Pheasant populations fluctuate with winter severity and habitat conditions, but Douglas County generally holds huntable numbers. Walk-in access programs through the DNR provide designated hunting land. Grouse can be found in the wooded areas north and east of town.
Turkey
Spring turkey season has a strong following. The area holds a good population of eastern wild turkeys. Permits are allocated by lottery — apply through the DNR. Fall turkey hunting is also available in some years.
Licenses & Access
Minnesota hunting licenses are available through the DNR website or at local sporting goods stores. Public land options include WMAs (Wildlife Management Areas), state forests, and walk-in access private land enrolled in DNR programs. Always verify land status and regulations before hunting — boundaries and rules vary by area.
