Biking

Two Wheels in Lake Country

Alexandria is a legitimate biking town, anchored by two major paved trails and supported by road riding options through scenic lake country. Whether you’re a serious road cyclist, a casual trail rider, or somewhere in between, there’s enough here to keep you pedaling all season.

The Trails

The Central Lakes Trail (55 miles, Alexandria to Fergus Falls) and the Lake Wobegon Trail (65 miles, Osakis to St. Joseph) connect in Osakis — giving riders access to over 100 miles of continuous paved trail from the Alexandria area. The surface is smooth asphalt, the grades are gentle, and the scenery rolls through farmland, small towns, and lake country. These trails are the main attraction.

Road Riding

The county roads around Alexandria offer good road biking with moderate traffic outside of peak summer weekends. Rolling terrain through lake and farm country makes for scenic rides. Popular routes loop through Carlos, Miltona, and the Chain of Lakes area. Shoulders vary — some roads have them, some don’t. Be visible and ride defensively.

Fat Biking

Fat biking has gained traction for winter riding. Groomed snow trails at Lake Carlos State Park and some informal routes around town provide winter riding options. It extends the biking season by four or five months if you’re willing to dress for it.

Bike Shops & Rentals

Local bike shops can help with sales, service, and advice on routes. Rental bikes are available for visitors who didn’t bring their own. If you’re planning a multi-day trail trip, some accommodations along the trail routes cater specifically to cyclists.
