Central Lakes Trail
55 Miles of Paved Trail
The Central Lakes Trail is a 55-mile paved path that runs from Fergus Falls to Osakis, passing right through Alexandria. It’s one of the longest paved trails in Minnesota and one of the best-maintained. Bikers, walkers, runners, and inline skaters use it year-round — though summer is peak season.
The Alexandria Section
The trail passes through the south side of Alexandria with access points near town. You can hop on from several spots without driving to a trailhead. From Alexandria, you can ride east toward Osakis through rolling farmland and small towns, or west toward Evansville and Fergus Falls through lake country.
Surface & Conditions
The trail is paved asphalt and in excellent condition for most of its length. It’s wide enough for two-way traffic without feeling cramped. Some road crossings require attention, but most are well-marked. The trail is generally flat with gentle grades — accessible for all fitness levels.
Connecting Trails
The Central Lakes Trail connects to the Lake Wobegon Trail in Osakis, which continues east toward St. Joseph and the St. Cloud area. Combined, the two trails give you over 100 miles of continuous paved riding. That connection makes Alexandria a legitimate base for multi-day bike trips.
Practical Info
No trail pass is required — it’s free to use. Water and restrooms are available at trailheads in Alexandria and a few other towns along the route. Bike rentals are available in town if you didn’t bring your own. The trail is plowed in some sections during winter but not consistently — check conditions before heading out in cold months.
