Dog Parks
Off-Leash Options
Alexandria has designated off-leash areas where dogs can run, socialize, and burn off the energy that’s been building up since you left for work. The options aren’t extensive — this isn’t a big city with a dog park on every corner — but what’s available works well enough for most dog owners.
Where to Go
The city maintains an off-leash dog park area with fenced space for both large and small dogs. It’s got enough room to throw a ball without hitting the fence, and the surface drains reasonably well after rain. Regular users tend to show up at consistent times, so you’ll start recognizing the same dogs and owners if you go often enough.
Rules
Standard dog park rules apply — pick up after your dog, make sure they’re up to date on vaccinations, keep them leashed until you’re inside the fenced area, and don’t bring aggressive dogs. Most people follow the rules. The ones who don’t get talked to by the ones who do.
Other Dog-Friendly Spots
Outside of the dedicated dog park, the Central Lakes Trail and Lake Wobegon Trail allow leashed dogs. Lake Carlos State Park allows leashed dogs on trails and in the campground but not on the beach. Several of the city parks are fine for leashed walks. In general, Alexandria is a dog-friendly town — you’ll see dogs everywhere in summer.
Swimming
Dogs love the lakes and the lakes don’t mind. There’s no dedicated dog beach, but plenty of informal spots along the lakes where people let their dogs swim. Just be mindful of other swimmers and keep your dog under control near public beaches. The quieter lake accesses and boat launches work well for dog swimming outside of busy hours.
