Lake Carlos State Park

The State Park

Lake Carlos State Park sits on the north shore of Lake Carlos, about 10 miles north of Alexandria. It covers over 1,200 acres of woods, prairie, and lakeshore — and it’s one of the best state parks in west-central Minnesota. Whether you’re camping for a week or just stopping in for a day hike, it delivers.

Camping

The park has over 120 campsites — a mix of drive-in, electric, and walk-in sites. Some sit close to the lake, others are tucked into the woods. There are also a couple of camper cabins if you want a roof without a hotel. Summer weekends book up fast, especially the lakeside spots. Reserve through the Minnesota DNR website as early as possible — 90 days out is not too early.

Hiking

About 10 miles of hiking trails wind through hardwood forests, along the lakeshore, and across restored prairie. The trails are well-maintained and range from easy lakeside walks to moderate loops with some elevation. In fall, the hardwood trails are some of the best leaf-viewing in the area.

Swimming & Beach

The park has a sandy swimming beach on Lake Carlos with clear water and a gradual entry. It’s the nicest public beach in the Alexandria area. No lifeguards, but the conditions are excellent. Changing rooms and restrooms are nearby.

Boat Access

There’s a public boat launch inside the park. A vehicle permit is required to enter — you can buy a daily or annual pass at the park entrance. The launch gives you direct access to Lake Carlos and the connected Chain of Lakes.

Winter

The park stays open year-round. In winter, the hiking trails become cross-country ski trails with groomed tracks. Snowshoeing is also popular. The campground closes seasonally, but day use continues through the cold months.
