Lake Wobegon Trail
Small-Town Trail
The Lake Wobegon Trail runs from Osakis east toward St. Joseph, covering about 65 miles of paved path through some of central Minnesota’s most pleasant small-town scenery. It connects to the Central Lakes Trail in Osakis, putting it within easy reach of Alexandria riders.
Why It’s Worth the Ride
The trail passes through a string of small towns — each with its own character, and several with places to stop for food or drinks along the way. It’s the kind of ride where you can make a day of it, stopping in towns you’d never otherwise visit. The name comes from Garrison Keillor’s fictional Lake Wobegon — the trail runs through the area that inspired it.
Getting There from Alexandria
The most direct route is to ride the Central Lakes Trail east to Osakis, then pick up the Lake Wobegon Trail heading east. From Alexandria to Osakis is about 18 miles — a manageable ride for most cyclists. You can also drive to Osakis and start from there if you want to save energy for the Wobegon section.
Surface & Conditions
Paved asphalt, well-maintained, and mostly flat. Similar to the Central Lakes Trail in quality. The trail follows old rail corridors, so the grades are gentle and the curves are wide. Good for families and casual riders, not just lycra-wearing road bikers.
Trail Pass
Unlike the Central Lakes Trail, the Lake Wobegon Trail requires a Minnesota trail pass for riders 16 and older. You can buy one at most bike shops, some trailhead stations, or online through the DNR. Daily and annual options are available. It’s a few bucks — don’t skip it, they do check.
