Playgrounds & Splash Pads
For the Kids
Alexandria has playgrounds spread across its park system, and a few of them are genuinely good — not just a rusty swing set and some wood chips. If you have young kids, knowing which playgrounds are worth the drive versus which ones are just fine for a quick stop makes a difference.
Best Playgrounds
City Park on Lake Agnes has one of the better playground setups, with equipment for multiple age groups and the beach right there as a bonus. Wildcat Cove has newer equipment and more space. Several neighborhood parks have smaller setups that work well for toddlers and younger kids who don’t need a destination playground.
Splash Pads
Alexandria has added splash pad features to some of its parks — free water play areas that run during summer months. These are lifesavers on hot days when you want to cool kids down without committing to a full beach trip. They typically run from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Tips for Parents
Most playgrounds are unshaded, so bring sunscreen and water on hot days. Restroom availability varies by park — City Park and the larger parks have them, smaller neighborhood parks may not. Mornings are usually less crowded than post-nap afternoons. And if you’re visiting from out of town, City Park plus the beach is probably your best one-stop option for keeping kids entertained.
